ChatGPT for Interior Design: Render Your Own Room

One empty living room and one ChatGPT chat: three design directions, a render of the real room, an evening version, a time-lapse and a roast.

To use ChatGPT for interior design, let it do what it's good at: turning a brief into design directions, colour palettes, material lists and furniture ideas. Then add the Fenestra plugin to render those ideas into a photo of your actual room, in the same chat. The render keeps the walls, windows and camera, and changes only what you ask for.

Fenestra is now in the ChatGPT plugin directory, so anyone can add it in one click, with no Developer mode. Add it, sign in, attach a room photo and describe the design. Below is the whole process, on one empty living room.

How do I add Fenestra to ChatGPT?

  1. Open the Fenestra plugin in ChatGPT and add it.
  2. Sign in to Fenestra when asked, and approve the connection.

If you don't have a Fenestra account yet, you can create one during that sign-in. Renders use your Fenestra credits. If you'd rather connect by URL with Developer mode, the ChatGPT setup guide covers that too.

How do you ask ChatGPT for interior design ideas?

Start with the brief: who the room is for, what has to stay and what you want back. The more specific the constraints, the more useful the answer. For this living room we asked:

"I'm redesigning this living room for a young couple. It's a rental, so the walls, floor and windows stay. Give me three design directions. For each one: a name, a colour palette, three main materials and five furniture pieces. Keep your responses short and sweet."

Three directions from one brief

A few things make the answers easier to use:

  • Ask for three directions. You get options to show a client, and the differences between them make the trade-offs clear. We use the same idea in the three-direction loop.
  • Name what can't change. Walls, flooring, windows, the sofa they're keeping.
  • Ask for things you can render. Named colours and materials work better than words like cosy or elevated. Soft Landing came back as cream, oat, sage and charcoal in oak, linen and wool, which is specific enough to render.

Can ChatGPT render my own room?

With Fenestra, yes. Attach a photo of the room and ask Fenestra for one of the directions. Naming Fenestra in the message is enough, or you can pick it from the tools menu. We went with Soft Landing:

"Use Fenestra to render direction 1 in this room. Keep the walls, windows and layout exactly as they are."

Fenestra renders the design into your photo at 2K and shows it in a card in the chat, where you can compare it with the original side by side or with a slider.

The vaulted timber ceiling, the skylights, the window seat and the kitchen all stay where they were. The sofa, lounge chair, dining set, rug and lamps are new.

ChatGPT's own image tool draws a new picture each time, so window positions, ceiling heights and proportions can move between versions. Fenestra treats your photo as the fixed room and changes the furniture, finishes and light.

How do you change the design without starting again?

Keep talking. Each follow-up applies to the last render, so you can work the way you would with a visualiser, a change or two at a time. For this room we asked for:

  • "Make it evening, with warm lamp light and the blinds pulled down. Also, add more plants to the space."

Other follow-ups that work the same way:

  • "Swap the sofa for a deep green velvet one and add a large jute rug."
  • "Try the walls in a warm off-white."

A message that asks for six changes at once tends to drift somewhere you didn't intend.

How do you turn the render into a video?

Ask for one. We turned the evening render into a short time-lapse into night:

"Animate the evening render as a time-lapse into night, with the camera still."

The evening render fading into night, in one 5-second clip

Fenestra makes a 5-second clip with the camera move you choose: push in or pull back, orbit, pan, zoom, a drone-style rise, or a static shot like this one. To blend the daylight and evening renders in one clip, ask for a transition between them.

For print or a presentation, ask Fenestra to "enhance the final render to 4K". By default the enhancement sharpens and upscales without changing the design.

Can ChatGPT critique a room design?

Ask it to roast the design. With Fenestra connected, you get a score, a verdict and three pointed notes, followed by a render that fixes them. We roasted our own evening render:

"Roast the design."

7.2/10. Beautiful bones. The furniture is still waiting for permission to have a personality.

  • Cream sofa, beige rug, oat blinds: the room has selected "accept all cookies" on neutrals.
  • Three little lamps on the bench look like a lighting showroom taking attendance.
  • The plants beside the sofa have formed a queue; apparently even the greenery needs a seating plan.

Then it rendered the fix:

After
Drag to compare the evening render with the roast's fix

Each note got an answer. A patterned rug and rust and charcoal cushions break up the neutrals, one amber glass lamp replaces the row of three, and the plants sit in groups instead of a queue. The walls, ceiling and windows stay as they were.

Can ChatGPT help architects?

The same plugin works on exteriors and early design images. Attach a hand sketch, a massing model or a SketchUp, Rhino, Revit or Archicad screenshot, and ask for a photoreal render:

"Use Fenestra to turn this sketch into a photoreal render: board-formed concrete, pale oak, late afternoon light."

Then use the chat to test what you'd usually wait on a visualiser for: a different cladding, an overcast sky, a dusk view for the planning set. ChatGPT is useful around the render too, for drafting the design statement, turning a client's feedback into a revision list or writing captions for a presentation board.

Can ChatGPT make a floor plan?

ChatGPT can talk through a layout, suggest room sizes and work out adjacencies, but it doesn't produce a measured plan you can build from. It works better the other way round, starting from the plan you already have. In Fenestra you can turn a 2D floor plan into furnished interior views.

Where do the renders go?

Every render, edit, enhancement and video saves to a ChatGPT Renders project in your Fenestra account. Open it and everything from the chat is laid out on a Crit Space board in the order you made it.

The whole chat, on one Crit Space board

From the board you can download full-size files, share it with a client, or open any image in Studio to keep editing. To keep a job together, tell ChatGPT where to save: "Save my renders to the Smith Residence project."

Frequently asked questions

Yes, with the Fenestra plugin. Add Fenestra from the ChatGPT plugin directory, attach a photo of the room and describe the design. Fenestra renders the new design into your photo and keeps the walls, windows and camera where they are.

No. Fenestra is in the ChatGPT plugin directory, so you add it in one click and sign in. Developer mode is only an alternative way to connect by URL.

Every render, edit, enhancement and video saves to a ChatGPT Renders project in your Fenestra account, laid out on a Crit Space board in the order you made them. You can also ask ChatGPT to save them to one of your other Fenestra projects.

Yes. Attach a sketch, a site photo or a SketchUp, Rhino, Revit or Archicad screenshot and ask Fenestra for a photoreal render. The same chat can then change the light, swap materials and animate the result.
